UFC 295 toppas av en titelmatch i tungvikt mellan Jon Jones och Stipe Miocic. Den topprankade welterviktaren Colby Covington får dock inte gå match på kortet. I alla fall om man ska tro på Covington själv.
Colby Covington – ”Får vad han vill ha”
Jones och Covington har en lång historia, som inledes med att de båda kombattanterna var rumskamrater med varandra under college-tiden. Under de senaste åren har de dock hamnat i konflikt med varandra. Bland annat har Covington uttryckt kritik mot tungviktsmästarens dopingöverträdelser.
Under en intervju med Michael Bisping berättade Covington att Jones har satt stopp för den tidigare vännens medverkan på UFC 295. Transkribering via MMA Junkie.
A little birdie told me, Michael, that he went backstage with the suits and the big dogs of the UFC and said, hey, he refuses to share a card with me. So, they’re gonna give him what he wants. They don’t want to ruin their New York show, and they’re still hoping he shows up. But they need a backup plan. He’s not reliable. I’m the ultimate company man.
Covington berättade också att Jones inte vill se sina skelett i garderoben från college-tiden lyftas fram i ljuset. Welterviktaren hade dock inte blivit förvånad om Jones drar sig ur sin kommande match mot den tidigare mästaren Miocic. I så fall är Covington redo att hoppa in för att ”rädda” galan.
Is Jon Jones going to be willing to share a card with his former college roommate who knows all his dirty secrets, all the dirty skeletons in his closet? I bet that he’s going over to the UFC right now and he’s telling them, ‘Yo, I’m not sharing a card with Colby. I will refuse to fight here.’ So, the only way I see that fight happening is, we know Jon’s unpredictable, we know he might go sniff some white girls, kind of like Joe Biden. He’s not to be relied on. He might get pulled off the card, and we might have to save the day and be the main event.
Covington är andrarankad i UFCs welterviktsdivision och förväntas möta den regerande bälteshållaren Leon Edwards härnäst. Amerikanen har gått titelmatch vid två tidigare tillfällen. I samband med båda dessa fighter tog den tidigare mästaren Kamaru Usman hem segern.
UFC 295 äger rum på Madison Square Garden, New York, den andra helgen i november.
