With twelve years in the sport, Nina Nunes announced her retirement from MMA. After a split decision win over Cynthia Calvillo at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 41 event, she took off her gloves and announced her career is over.

“As a fighter I think I’ve done what I wanted to. It started as a hobby, I got all the way here,” Nunes said in the octagon. “I’m going to focus on coaching and bringing up those girls that are struggeling right now.”

Nina Nunes: “I know I could’ve gone further in this sport”

At the post-fight press conference Nina Nunes explained that the decision had not been easy.

“I know I could’ve gone further in this sport, but I took two years off for a baby, a year off for a knee surgery, all these things adding up. I’m just glad I was able to accomplish what I was,” Nunes said. “I am done. Completely done. I told myself when I really retired, I would really retire and focus all my energy on whoever is next.”

“I always wanted to have more kids, I wanted to have them close together. I’m not doing that comeback again, because that was horrible. So, I’m just going to stop and make a couple in a row.”
