Robert Whittaker tror han vet varför Dricus Du Plessis lyckats ta hem ett par nyckelsegrar i UFC.
Robert Whittaker tror alla underskattat Dricus du Plessis
Dricus du Plessis har just nu sju raka segrar och har inte besegrats sedan oktober 2017 när han knockades av Robert Soldic. Sydafrikanen har under sviten besegrat toppnamn som Derek Brunson som Darren Till. Vid UFC 290 den 8 juli kom Du Plessis ta sig an den forne UFC-mellanviktsmästaren Robert Whittaker. En seger mot denne skulle nästan garantera att Du Plessis en titelchans mot den nuvarande mellanviktsmästaren Israel Adesanya.
Tidigare i månaden dök ingen mindre än sydafrikanens kommande motståndare Whittaker upp vid eftersändningen för UFC Vegas 75 där han gav sin teori om varför Du Plessis plötsligt blivit en av de hetaste mellanviktarna i organisationen:
I guess if fights were won on paper, the entire sport would be very different. And I understand that’s not how fights are won, I understand the threat that Dricus can bring to the table and bring to me moving forward, to trying to achieve what I want.
I do believe that is one of the major reasons why Dricus has had the success he’s had, because he’s going up against these dudes and these guys are not giving him his credit, they’re not giving the respect his skill set deserves. I fully understand that I have bled and sweat and trained my butt off to take the war to him come UFC 290.
Segraren kommer inte få mycket tid på sig
UFC-bossen Dana White har redan bekräftat att segraren mellan Whittaker och Du Plessis kommer att få utmana om Adesanyas bälte.
UFC siktar just nu på den 10 september för Adesanyas återkomst vilket inte skulle de segraren och tillika den kommande utmanaren mycket tid att återhämta sig efter matchen i juli. Whittaker säger dock att han är mer än redo att klara av det korta tidsspannet även om han inte underskattar Du Plessis:
I definitely am not looking past Dricus. He’s too dangerous and the fight has too much gravity in July, and all my focus and attention and dedication is going into July. But I’ll tell you one thing: If I’m healthy and able, I will take a fight.
At any date, any time. I’ll take a fight two days after July if I’m healthy and able. So yeah, let’s get through July, and yeah, I’m in the fight game, you know? I’m in the business.
Det återstår att se om Whittaker lyckas med sina förberedelser mot Du Plessis.
