Sean O’Malley såg fram emot möjligheten att möta Henry Cejudo, trots att han anser att matchningen hade varit en enkel fight.

Tyvärr verkar den matchen inte bli av under den närmaste framtiden då Cejudo nyligen förlorade knappt på poäng i sin comeback mot bantamviktsmästaren Aljamain Sterling vid UFC 288. Cejudo återvände efter en treårig paus, och en seger över Sterling skulle kunnat ha gett honom den efterlängtade matchen mot fjäderviktsmästaren Alexander Volkanovski eller någon av de många utmanarna i bantamviktsklassen.
I Cejudos frånvaro har O’Malley etablerat sig som den främsta utmanaren i bantamvikt efter att kontroversiellt besegrat Petr Yan i sin senaste match. O’Malley säger nu att det var bättre för Cejudo att förlora så att han slapp förnedras av honom.

I think Henry lucked out. He got lucky he lost that fight because I do believe I would have put Henry’s lights out. He stands there with his chin up. I’m sure you saw Conor [McGregor’s] tweet and stuff, that was absolutely hilarious because Henry, he thinks he’s just this—He has a good résumé, he’s really good, don’t get me wrong, but he thinks he invented play sparring. He thinks he’s just this guy that is the incredible guy, it’s just annoying. So I would have loved to sleep that dude.
He walks out there with his chin up, he fights like he’s 6-foot-3, he’s not. He fights like he’s a tall guy and you think being as smart as he is he would have a little bit better style, but I was just fired up in there.
Ansåg att Cejudo vann matchen
Conor McGregors tweet som O’Malley refererar till visade en kort video där McGregor firade Sterlings seger och gjorde narr av Cejudos fighting stance. Tweeten lade upp (och togs senare bort) strax efter slutet av UFC 288, och Cejudo svarade senare genom att hävda att McGregor ”inte har en jävla chans mot mitt CV.”
O’Malley väljer nu att hålla med McGregor i kritiken av Cejudos stance.
He did well, I honestly thought he had won the fight, but it’s just like, maybe ‘Captain’ [Eric Albarracin] told him to stand like that?’ O’Malley said. “I don’t know if he thought of it himself, but for someone that speaks so highly of themselves, you think he would have a little bit better style being his kind of build.
Cejudo-matchen hade varit mer lukrativ än den mot Sterling
Efter att Sterling har besegrat Cejudo, T.J. Dillashaw och Petr Yan i sina tre första UFC-titelförsvar stundar med stor sannolikhet en match mot O’Malley i titelförsvar nummer fyra.
Både O’Malley och Sterling verkar överens om att fighten kommer att äga rum i år. O’Malley är dock övertygad om att en match mot Cejudo skulle locka mer publik än en mot Sterling,
I think [Cejudo is the bigger money fight], but now that Aljo beat Henry, me vs. Aljo is still a really big fight. I think me vs. Henry is a little bit bigger fight, but not much difference. Those guys are similar draws. I’m very curious what the pay-per-views did for this fight. I think me vs. Aljo could double it—Or I could double it, sorry.
Det finns många anledningar till varför O’Malley skulle vilja fightas mot Cejudo längre fram i tiden, oavsett om det är för att han tror att det skulle vara en fördelaktig match eller att han anser att det skulle vara ärorikt att ta en seger över en kampsportslegend som har vunnit OS-guld i fristilsbrottning och UFC-titlar i flugvikt och bantamvikt.
Men om du frågar O’Malley är hans motivation att möta Cejudo inte särskilt komplicerad.
You can’t tell me you wouldn’t like to punch him in the face. He’s just got that face. That big head, short arms, short legs, he’s 5-foot-4, he fights with his chin higher than—I don’t know, there’s just something about Henry I would have loved to smack him.
Who knows, maybe somewhere down the line somewhere if he doesn’t quit again, then we can make that happen.
