UFC-mästaren i bantamvikt Aljamain Sterling (22-3) anser inte att en match mot Henry Cejudo (16-2) låter spännande och han möter hellre Sean O’Malley (16-1) i nästa titelförsvar.
Aljamain Sterling är inte exalterad av att möta Henry Cejudo
Cejudo lade handskarna på hyllan i maj 2020 och gav då ifrån sig bantamviktstiteln. Den tidigare dubbelmästaren planerar dock en comeback och kommer snart få tillåtelse att återvända till oktagonen. Han vill dock ha en omedelbar match om titeln som han aldrig förlorade till en motståndare. Den nye mästaren Sterling, som ser ut att gå nästa match i mitten av nästa år, är dock inte intresserad.
Sterling sade följande till reportrar vid en presskonferens tidigare i månaden enligt MMA Junkie:
I’m like, no one told you to retire, bro. We all knew you were going to come back. Like, what stupid games are you playing? That’s on you. The division has passed you by, and what you’ve done three years ago doesn’t quite hold a candle to what everyone’s doing right now in competing. This game I think has kind of passed him.
He’s a smart dude, he’s getting older, but that fight doesn’t really move me. Like, I’m not getting up in the morning going, ‘Yeah, I’m fighting Henry Cejudo.’ I fight (Sean) O’Malley, I’m like, ‘Yeah, this is a big f*cking fight.’ I fight (Marlon) ‘Chito’ Vera, I’m like, ‘This is dangerous and a big f*cking fight.’ With Henry, it’s just like I’m fighting the ‘King of Cringe,’ whatever you want to call him.
Anser att O’Malley gjort sig förtjänt av titelmatchen
Många har ansett att O’Malleys seger i den senaste matchen mot Petr Yan var tvivelaktig och till och med segraren själv verkade förvånad när den delade domslutssegern förkunnades. Sterling sade dock till MMA Fighting att O’Malley gjort sig förtjänt av titelmatchen:
O’Malley did earn it – I can’t deny that. Even Dana [White] said you beat the No. 1 contender so it made sense and then somehow, some way he backtracked.
I’m not sure if he thought my fight wasn’t going to go that way, and I’m not sure if he thought the Yan-O’Malley fight was going to go that way as far as being so competitive. He probably thought somebody was going to get stopped and then, ‘Holy s*** this guy definitely needs to fight for the title!’ That’s usually how it works. It’s usually the performance, but it was a great performance from both guys. Both guys fought their asses off. They got ‘Fight of the Night.’ So I don’t see why either one should have been denied that follow up claim that Dana made that whoever won would be next and he threw Cejudo in there.
Sterling förstår att en seger mot Cejudo hade varit bra för hans legacy som fighter men han tror att en vinst hade varit mindre värd i och med att den forne mästaren återvänder efter en lång frånvaro:
If I beat Cejudo, you beat a guy coming off the couch. Oh, he was off for three years.’ There’s always gonna be a narrative that people are gonna have and try and discredit you. So, why not fight someone who’s actually been in here competing? Give me the guy who’s been competing, who’s the No. 1 guy, who just beat the No. 1 guy.
