I samband med UFC Vegas 67 passade Dana White på att avslöja flera stora nyheter. Press-konferensen efter galan stod för information som Francis Ngannous beslut att lämna UFC samt Jon Jones återkomst mot Ciryl Gane.
Nyheten om Jones efterlängtade tungviktsdebut stal rampljuset från andra matcher som annonserades. Bland dessa var det tredje mötet mellan Leon Edwards och Kamaru Usman. En match MMA-journalisten Ariel Helwani tycker förtjänade mer uppmärksamhet. På sin podcast The MMA Hour påpekade han UFCs, enligt honom, bristfälliga uppbyggnad av mötet.
I kind of chuckled a little bit. People love to say… ‘Oh man, you really screwed the UFC with that Brock Lesnar announcement.’ … Meanwhile, these massive fights like Leon and Kamaru 3, huge UK pay-per-view… first time since 2016, just gets announced in a throwaway comment at a press conference. Like, come on. The argument that they have these big plans all the time, like, ‘You’re really screwing their plans.
Helwani läckte information kring Brock Lesnars comeback 2016, något som ofta hållits emot honom. Något han menar inte spelar någon roll då UFC själva gör ett så halvdant jobb på att annonsera nya matcher.
A throwaway comment. Kamaru Usman versus Leon Edwards 3, one of the biggest fights of the year, just gets thrown away like that. ‘Oh, and by the way, forgot to mention, that fight’s happening. Oh, and by the way, Fiziev versus Gaethje too. Like, nothing? That’s it? That was the big announcement?
