Colby Covington är inte rädd för att ta ställning i politiska frågor. Nu har han gett sitt stöd till Conor McGregor.

UFC:s tidigare dubbelmästare McGregor har under de senaste månaderna engagerat sig mer och mer i politiska frågor som rör hemlandet Irland. Det hela kulminerade i att den tidigare bälteshållaren berättade om sitt mål att bli president i landet. Enligt McGregor måste Irlands befolkning få större möjligheter att göra sina röster hörda och att ”en sann demokrati” bör införas.
… A true democracy!… This is why I’d run, if I was to. To be a voice of the people that deserve to be heard. President of Ireland is a unique position to other countries but it would demand response to questioning. Dialect would be so good for us in the public. Our people feel ignored. Unheard. Until of course election time. Then the waffle begins.
Vid sidan om sina politiska ambitioner vill McGregor även återvända till buren och UFC. Det blev ingen match under 2023, men han förväntas göra en comeback under 2024.
”Fantastiska ledaregenskaper”
Under en intervju med Mirror Fighting delar Covington med sig av sina tankar om uttalandet. Enligt Covington visar irländaren på starka ledaregenskaper och har en tro på frihet. Transkribering via BJPenn.com.
Yeah I think Conor would be a great leader, he has a lot of those leadership, world championship qualities, and he believes in freedom, which is most important. I respect Conor so much because he cares about his people and how much he wants freedom for his people. He doesn’t want to see his people killed in the streets and the streets of Ireland being burned. So, I sympathize with Conor and I think he would be a great leader over there.
Vidare menar Covington att McGregor redan är en fajter i världsklass och att han skulle kunna göra storartade förändringar inom irländsk politik.
The guy is already a world-class fighter, one of the best fighters we’ve seen in the sport, the biggest fighter for sure the sport has ever seen. I think he would do great things in politics in Ireland.”
Covington kommer gå en titelmatch i welterviktsdivisionen härnäst. I samband med UFC 296, som äger rum nästa helg, ställs han mot den regerande mästaren Leon Edwards. Eventet äger rum på T-Mobile Arena i Las Vegas.
