UFC-bossen Dana White anser att Israel Adesanya inte var sig lik vid UFC 293. Han kan dock inte sätta fingret på vad som exakt inte stod rätt till.
Dana White anser att Israel Adesanya såg ut att fightas i slow motion
I mellanviktsmatchen i galans main event förlorade Israel Adesanya (24-3) sin mellanviktstitel till Sean Strickland (28-5). Detta via enhälligt domslut i en av viktklassens större skrällar. Efter galan sade Dana White att det såg ut som att Adesanya fightades i slow motion. VD:n sade följande vid post-fight presskonferensen:
He looked like he couldn’t get off. He looked like he was really stiff tonight. He looked very slow. … Only Israel knows what’s going on. I’m very curious to see what he says at this press conference tonight.
There are a million things that could go wrong. Some days you wake up and you’re just not there, man. It’s just not there. He looked bone-dry tonight, standing up really tall. He looked very slow. He looked like he couldn’t get off at all. Even in the fifth round when everybody knew he needed a knockout to win the fight, there was no sense of urgency to try to finish the fight. So I don’t know if he’s hurt or if tonight’s the night.
Hyllar Strickland
Efter matchen valde Adsesanya att hoppa över den sedvanliga frågestunden under post-fight presskonferensen. Istället fick nigerianens coach Eugene Bareman ta emot frågarna. Adesanyas egna slutsatser om förlusten kommer behöva komma senare. White har dock en sak klar för sig; Strickland förtjänar stor kredd för sin insats inatt:
He came into hostile territory with the whole world talking shit about him, the whole world saying he couldn’t do it. A seven-to-one underdog, he came in and almost finished him in the first round and won the championship, won the world title.
Everything that we’re talking about right now about how crazy this sport is, when opportunities arise, you jump on them and you take them. You should never turn down fights when you get the call, especially if it’s for a world title.
Blir en omedelbar rematch
I och med Adesanyas position i viktklassen och i sportens historia så är White tydlig med att det är troligt med en omedelbar rematch med Strickland.
I think you do the rematch, absolutely. The rematch is interesting. That could be the thing, too. When you think about you’re going into the Pereira fight, such a big fight, and you’ve been in there with this guy so many times, and then you overlook Strickland. You come in and I don’t know. I don’t know the answers to these questions, but Israel does, and I’m looking forward to hearing it.
White brukar ofta välja att inte svara klart på frågor om kommande matcher. Därför talar mycket för att Adesanya får chansen att ta revansch om han så önskar.
Totalt har Adesanya försvarat sitt mellanviktsbälte fem gånger men har nu förlorat bältet två gånger på ett år. Detta efter att tidigare avslutats av ärkerivalen Alex Pereira via TKO varefter Adesanya knockade denne i våras. Nigerianen erövrade bältet för första gången år 2019 efter att knockat Robert Whittaker. Därefter har han försvarat bältet mot fighters som Yoel Romero, Paulo Costa, Marvin Vettori, Jared Cannonier och nämnde Whittaker.
Strickland har nu tre raka segrar efter att tidigare i år besegrat Nassourdine Imavov via enhälligt domslut och Abusupiyan Magomedov genom TKO. Det återstår att se när vi får se den aktive amerikanen gå sitt första titelförsvar.
