Före detta UFC-mästaren Dominick Cruz har uttryckt sin lättnad efter en spännande titelmatch mellan Aljamain Sterling och Henry Cejudo vid UFC 288.
Dominick Cruz hyllar Aljamain Sterling efter segern mot Henry Cejudo
Cruz var förvånad över att en domare gav femte ronden till Sterling, eftersom han ansåg att Cejudo hade dominerat den ronden.
Men Cruz var också tacksam över att Cejudos sena anstormning inte räckte för att vinna matchen. Han tror att bantamviktsdivisionen hade tagit stor skada om Cejudo hade fortsatt att vara mästare.
Cruz sade följande igår i The MMA Hour:
We’re lucky that MMA didn’t get hit too hard by that, because I think that it would have been really catastrophic to have Henry there [as champion]. I think Sterling is gonna be much better for the 135-pound division as champion. I just think he’s more active, shows himself as a champion that I’m proud to say he’s the champion at 135, the way he carries himself, the way that he fights, the way that he shows respect, stuff like that.
So it’s cool to have him now. I’m glad he’s champion.
Cejudo duckar pressen
Cruz har tidigare haft ordväxlingar med Cejudo och menar att hans motståndare valde att pensionera sig och lämna ifrån sig bantamviktstiteln efter deras senaste match, istället för att möta honom i en returmatch. Cruz anser att det var ett sätt att undvika pressen.
Men Cruz själv är inte redo att pensionera sig ännu och tror fortfarande att han har en chans att återta titeln i framtiden. Han ser fram emot nya utmaningar, inklusive en potentiell match mot nuvarande mästaren Aljamain Sterling:
This is what people dodge when they retire – they dodge the pressure, they dodge USADA coming in the house, they dodge the pool, they dodge the work, they dodge the heat, and I don’t respect that. Aldo never dodged the heat. He stayed in it. He’s still staying in it. I think that Henry would have dodged the heat, and it would have been hard for the bantamweight division.
Trots segern blev dock Sterling buad inför hemmapubliken.
