UFC-legendaren Daniel Cormier tror att Colby Covington kämpar för att hålla sig relevant i och med den pågående fejden med Ian Machado Garry.

Colby Covington förlorade mot UFC:s welterviktsmästare Leon Edwards via enhälligt domslut vid UFC 296 i december. Förlusten var hans tredje i en UFC-titelmatch efter två tidigare förluster mot Kamaru Usman.
Covingto befinner sig i en udda position i UFC:s weltervikt. Efter att han nu förlorat tre titelmatcher är hans chanser att få ett fjärde försök låga just nu.
I och med att Covington funderar på sitt nästa drag har han hittat en ny rival i UFC i form av obesegrade Garry. Precis som Covington har Garry blivit en ”skurk” i många UFC-fans ögon i och med en del kontroverser utanför oktagonen.
Saker har eskalerat mellan Covington och Garry under de senaste veckorna och en potentiell match mellan herrarna förblir ett möjligt alternativ. Daniel Cormier tror nu att Covington inte har något annat val än att acceptera Garrys utmaningar för att hålla sig relevant.
Cormier sade följande i ett nyligt klipp via sin YouTube-kanal:
What does Colby Covington fight for today? What motivates him? It seems to be the big fights. Competitively, you got to beat the guy that wants to be the up-and-comer, because regardless of what you think of Ian Garry…he can fight. After the Leon Edwards fight, he might not be looking forward to facing another long, rangy striker. But, the actions say ‘Let’s fight’, now it’s time to put pen to paper…
When he spoke about Kamaru Usman, he fought him. When he talked about Leon Edwards, he fought him…if you’re going to take this role, or play the villain in everybody’s story, the villain always has to get his ‘comeuppance’, when he has to stand in front of the sword and fight…he’s gotta stand behind his words. Colby’s gotta stand up on his words now, and if he beats him, he’ll still continue to think he’s in the championship picture.
Covingtons senaste seger kom mot Jorge Masvidal vid UFC 272. Han har nu förlorat två av sina tre senaste matcher inklusive den mot Edwards.
Garry har å sin sida stigit i weltervikten med nyliga segrar över Geoff Neal och Neil Magny. Den forne Cage Warriors-mästaren har ännu aldrig förlorat i sin karriär även om Covington skulle bli hans överlägset svåraste motståndare.
Om Covington fortfarande vill vara aktuell för en titelchans skulle en seger mot Garry vara ett bra drag.
