New-crowned welterweight champion Leon “Rocky” Edwards is open to give Nate Diaz a shot at the title if the Stockton fighter beats Khamzat Chimaev on September 10. The two met in June last year, and even though The Brit won the fight, Diaz had Edwards badly rocked in the very last minute of the final round.

In a recent interview with The MMA Hour, “Rocky” claimed that he hopes Diaz will beat Khamzat so that he can face him again.

“Imagine the scenes. The scenes,” Edwards told Ariel Helwani. “I really hope he does, imagine the scenes. I would 100 percent give him a shot as well. That would be, the scenes would be crazy. I would 100 percent give Nate a shot because Nate’s a ‘G,’ man. I said it even after the fight, he is who he is. He’s one of the guys, the game’s never changed him. If that does happen, then Nate’s definitely getting the shot.”

Nate Diaz has one more fight on his UFC contract

However, even if Nate Diaz stands as the winner against Chimaev in the main event of UFC 279, it will be his first win in three years.

Furthermore, the unranked Stockton fighter is on the last fight of his current UFC contract and has been very clear that he wants out of the organization to test his wings as a free agent.
