According to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, a massive lightweight fight between No. 2 ranked Dustin Poirier and No. 5 ranked Michael Chandler is in the works for UFC 281 at Madison Square Garden. Even though the fight is one of the biggest in the division, it’s unclear if it would serve as the main event of the evening, since it’s not for the title.

Chandler and Poirier have been calling each other out for quite some time, and recently, they got into an verbal altercation visiting UFC 276.

Dustin Poirier is a two-time title challenger

Former two-time title challenger Dustin Poirier comes from a tough submission loss to Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 last December. Before that, “The Diamond” has back-to-back stoppage-wins over his rival Conor McGregor at UFC 257 and UFC 264. Besides defeating McGregor twice, his most notable wins came against Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway.

Michael Chandler last fought at UFC 274 in May when he knocked out Tony Ferguson with a crazy head kick. The former Bellator champion made his UFC debut in January 2021 with a first-round KO against Dan Hooker. Since then he fought the very elite of the lightweight division in Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira, Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson.
