Justin Gaethje har svårt att se sig besegra Max Holloway vid UFC 300 och sedan utmana Islam Makhachev om lättviktstiteln endast sju veckor senare.
Justin Gaethje vill inte möta Islam Makhachev i sommar
’BMF’-titelmatchen mellan Justin Gaethje (25-4) och Max Holloway (25-7) under lördagens historiska gala i T-Mobile Arena i Las Vegas, Nevada har mötts av visst motstånd inom MMA-världen. I synnerhet från de som anser att det stört lättviktsklassen.
Både lättviktsmästaren Islam Makhachev och forne mästaren Khabib Nurmagomedov har båda varit kritiska mot UFC:s matchbokning. Detta då de ansåg att Gaethje borde blivit nästa titelutmanare istället.
I och med att Charles Oliveira och Arman Tsarukyan också är tänkta att mötas vid UFC 300 så tror inte Makhachev att någon av dessa kommer att kunna möta honom vid hans önskade datum den 1 juni. Istället har Makhachev utmanat Dustin Poirier till galan UFC 302.
Gaethje erkänner att han varit irriterad om Poirier, som han knockade vid UFC 291 i juli om ’BMF’-titeln, skulle få Makhachevs första titelförsvar. Han kan dock inte se sig fightas i juni då han föredrar att fightas igen i slutet av året.
Gaethje sade följande till MMA Junkie:
Ideally, they’re calling this Oliveira-Tsarukyan fight a title eliminator, so the winner of that fight fights (Makhachev) in June, then I fight the winner of that in preferably Madison Square Garden in November.
That sounds like a perfect timeline for me. I’ll definitely have my time to rest, recovery and retrain myself to get ready for that fight. That’s the perfect situation for me. We’ll see if Oliveira sh*ts the bed again. I think if Tsarukyan wins he takes it because they are calling this a title eliminator, so whoever wins is going to have to fight that fight.
Gaethje säger att han uppskattar de fans som anser att han borde fightas mot Makhachev härnäst istället för Holloway. Det är dock för sent för att ändra på saker. Han är nu fullständigt mentalt och fysiskt förberedd för att möta Holloway denna helg. Om han gör sig bra ifrån sig så är han säker på att få fightas om UFC-bältet härnäst:
I think if you appreciate the way that this sport works, I fought (Rafael) Fiziev, I knocked out the No. 2 guy and there’s nobody left.
Oliveira was supposed to fight him in October. I was supposed to fight the winner of that fight in February. But it did not work out like that so this is where we’re at, and this is what I have to take care of.
